Counselling and therapy in Buxton

Hi, my name is Bel – a warm welcome to ‘Bel Graham Counselling’, provider of counselling and therapy in Buxton, Derbyshire. I offer a comfortable, safe and confidential space for you to talk through issues that you may be struggling with and that may be compromising your general wellbeing. The counselling space is a calm oasis that provides just the right ingredients for you to pause, take time to reflect on your situation, and through this restore your life balance.

Counselling and psychotherapy are ‘talking therapies’ used to provide relief from mental health issues and emotional problems, where individuals are supported to share and work through their concerns.  These are often issues that are difficult to talk about with friends and family, perhaps because of their personally sensitive nature and for fear of judgement, or a lack of understanding, from those closest to you. There are many common experiences that lead people to seek therapy, including:

  • stress, both personal and work related
  • depression
  • anxiety and panic attacks
  • relationship difficulties
  • facing challenges such as: bereavement, divorce and redundancy
  • coping with dissatisfaction arising from work, social and family situations
  • being overwhelmed by feelings such as anger, sadness or emptiness
  • phobias, compulsive behaviours and intrusive thoughts
  • sexual problems
  • eating disorders
  • trauma, both past and present, including the effects of childhood abuse
  • a desire for personal growth and development

Counselling / Psychotherapy provide ways of exploring thoughts and feelings, helping people to strengthen their emotional resourcefulness and access strategies that enable them to cope with challenges.  In a collaborative process between therapist and client built on respect, trust and understanding, the aim is to bring about the changes in thinking and behaviour that will allow individuals to lead more gratifying and rewarding lives.

As a counsellor and psychotherapist registered with the BACP, it is my professional pledge to listen to whatever you wish to discuss without passing judgement. When you choose to work with me these are my commitments to you:

  • to listen attentively to your issues/problems
  • to ensure your information remains confidential & secure
  • to let you talk at your own pace
  • to provide a respectful space in which to discuss and understand your feelings
  • to use a range of therapeutic methods to explore your issues
  • to help you consider available options
  • to guide you towards the most helpful solution for your particular circumstances

Your first therapy session

The first session will include an initial assessment so I can get an idea of your presenting issues to determine whether I can offer you the support that you need. You will be asked to discuss what has brought you to counselling and what you would like to achieve through therapy. Within this first session I will also explain how I work thereby giving you the opportunity to ask questions. If you wish to go ahead with further sessions I ask you to agree this formally through a written agreement/contract. This will detail when we will meet, for how long, cost, what you need to do if you have to cancel a session etc.  This agreement will be regularly reviewed and updated as therapy progresses to ensure your needs remain at the centre of the process.  Everyone of course is different and will therefore have their own unique expectations and needs of the therapeutic process. The number of sessions required to reach your desired outcome will inevitably be determined by these factors. Whether I recommend a short course or a longer term commitment, this will be clearly indicated before any contract is agreed.

If you are in need of empathetic and professional therapy in Buxton, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
