How I can help with issues related to your identity & diversity in society

As a therapist I work on the premise that as individuals we are all unique having been shaped by our own genes and experiences. It is important to me that any client entering my therapy room feels accepted for who they are and how they present within the boundaries of the counselling room. So whether you are male, female, gender fluid, young, old, black, white , gay straight, person with a disability or able bodied I see and accept those traits as they are significant in making up who you are, your identity. Alongside your uniqueness I also see potential, which may/can feel hidden for the client and this is often what has to be re-awakened within the counselling process/journey.

There are many human experiences where identity is shaken or it feels confusing to sit comfortably within our own skin. For example I have worked in adoption for many years and witnessed the struggle that many people who have been adopted navigate the challenges and benefits of having a birth family and an adopted family particularly in terms of where they belong. Similarly if you are a child of mixed heritage identity can feel difficult to process particularly when one part of your cultural heritage has been dominated by the other. In both these circumstances the counselling space can provide the accepting forum that a client needs to work this out stand tall, synthesise in order to feel whole. Feeling dis-ease with your identity can occur at different points in the life cycle, having a space to process thoughts and feelings can result in a return to wholeness.
